My practice explores maeum (마음), a Korean word that encompasses emotion, memory, thought, will, and bodily sensation before they are separated into distinct categories. I am interested in how this inner state is continually formed through our relationships with the world around us.

Nature has become central to this enquiry. I do not approach landscape as something to observe or reproduce, but as a presence with which I form a relationship. Encounters with water, light, mountains, clouds, and changing atmospheres remain with me as sensory memories. Smell plays a particular role in how I remember: a remembered scent can bring back the light, air, emotion, and physical sensation of a moment all at once. Through painting, I translate these experiences into colour, light, movement, and material.

Rather than inventing imagined landscapes, I paint from moments that have been lived and remembered. Loose brushwork, layered colour and recurring natural forms allow these memories to be reconstructed rather than reproduced. At times, painting expands beyond the canvas through suspended and sculptural elements, allowing image and material to enter the surrounding space.

Painting becomes a way of returning to these experiences and discovering the fragments of maeum they have left within me.
